IT To Know

How can the messenger app understand that a message has been seen or not?

After writing this article, I remembered my childhood. I used to write letters to my relatives from class 3/4, but later, when I visited Mama’s house, I heard that they had not received any of the letters you had sent. Later I heard that the name of their post office had changed, so they did not receive a single letter from me. As a child, I had a big question, where would these letters that had not been delivered actually go? – Later, as I heard from someone’s mouth, these would be filled.

However, let’s not waste time listening to the story of our country’s postal service. Fortunately, modern messaging apps send delivery reports just as well, so you can easily see if your message has reached the desired person. The report on whether the message was read again comes to you… but how does this system work?

Seen

Suppose a friend of yours is texting you repeatedly, but you don’t want to reply or feel annoyed, so ignore. But suddenly the message was opened from the notification due to pressure and at the same time your friend, but it was as if you were near the phone and also did the scene of the message. – Even if you have no desire to reply, but this time you have to reply, and this time you went under great pressure! – Has that ever happened to you? Well, as far as we know, this is what happens to all of us nowadays.

He sent a message to your crush. He also did the scene, but that “no answer ” trouble is there. You know he read the message; if you didn’t know it, the trouble would be a little less. However, I am not here to discuss your personal life. But how does the orthodox “Seen” of all this waste work?

Read Receipt

Even before the birth of Telegram, WhatsApp, or Facebook Messenger, postal services would leave a return receipt after delivering the letter, allowing them to track whether the letter was delivered properly easily. As a child, I used to see in Bengali black and white movies that a peon would come and take a letter to someone and sign it. The Receipt is then sent to the person who sent the letter to him to know if the letter or package has been delivered quickly. But as far as I remember, this facility would not have been available if I had not registered the letter later.

Thanks to technology, we no longer exchange letters, at least in terms of personal communication. And since information can be given easily with the help of the internet, modern communications are completed through the internet.

When it comes to email or modern messaging services, they are a million times faster and more reliable than letter writing. Developers confirm email messages or instant messages and delivery reports on similar services in the Postal Service. Delivery Status Notification or DSN and Message Disposition Notification or MDN are used to control the Delivery Notification System and Read Receipt.

In short, DSN confirms that the message has been delivered properly, and MDN confirms that the message has been opened. In modern messaging apps, the server works in the middle to send or receive any message. Yes, of course, not all messaging apps in the world work on the same model; they have different systems.

However, when you send a message to someone, it reaches the server first. The server immediately notifies you that the message has been sent. The server then tries to send the message to the recipient according to the recipient ID. If the recipient’s internet connection is correct, the message will be floated in his messenger. The notification goes to the server from the recipient’s app that he has received the message. The server then notifies you that the message has been delivered. Then when the recipient opens or scenes or reads the message, the signal from his app goes to the server that the message has been opened. Then the server informs you that the message has sinned!

There are many more types of status in modern messaging apps. For example, when you chat with someone, you can see if they are writing. These apps not only send data when sending messages but also always send it to different data servers. And this is how the read receipt system can work perfectly.

As much unrest as doing the massage scene

When I was a child, I sent huge letters to my uncles, and later I found out that it had not reached me, there was nothing sadder than that for that time. Compared to that, the delivery report and read receipt of modern messaging apps are many useful features. You’re going to do everything instantly. But with that comes a variety of unique types of stress that we didn’t have to face before.

If you reply late or don’t reply at all after opening someone’s message, different social pressures may be created depending on the person, which will affect some part of your life. Moreover, when you see a message and when you reply is a very personal matter. If anyone else knows when you are reading the message, it is a serious privacy issue.

Fortunately, some messaging apps, such as WhatsApp or Viber, allow you to turn off read receipts, but they also have the opposite effect. If the read receipt is turned off, of course, if you read a message, it will not be notified to the sender, but on the contrary, you will not be able to see if the message you sent is a scene. Moreover, many popular messaging apps do not yet have an official way to turn off read receipts. For example, in Facebook Messenger, you can’t turn off the read receipt. People use Reed Receipt Off using various third-party extensions, but it only works in desktop browsers or mobile browsers or separate modified apps, not in the original app.

Read receipts are good things. We always like to know if anyone has read our sent message or not. In this case, if you go to protect privacy, you will easily lose control over many things, and if you want to control privacy. The situation may be completely different in each case, but the massage scene feature can certainly create a lot of embarrassment and stress. I don’t know much about human psychology, so it’s hard for me to explain it in simple terms. I hope you have understood the gist of the whole article by now, and you already know how the messenger apps can know it after reading the message!
