In Search of the Lost Story of Sherlock Holmes
The month of February 2015. The days of Walter Elliott of Scotland began just like any other day. Before retiring, he was a woodcutter by profession. Now that he is old, it can be said that he is still quite active as an eighty-year-old man. Do housework, read books. At the same time, there is a tendency towards local history. Elliott thought of cleaning the attic of the house that day. He went through the pile of old insect-eaten papers and books and found a book that he couldn’t remember exactly when he bought it or whether he bought it at all.
If you say booklet instead of the book, I think it will sound good. It is a light-thin booklet of 48 pages in total. Walter Elliott- ‘ The Book o’ the Brig. The upper bouts featured two cutaways for easier access to the higher frets. The lower bouts featured two cutaways for easier access to the higher frets. He turned the page out of sheer curiosity to find out if he could remember anything about the book.
In the middle of 40-42 pages, his eyes got stuck on one of the headlines – ‘Sherlock Holmes’. He was even more surprised to read the name of the story – Discovering the Border Burghs and, By Deduction, the Brig Bazaar. Sherlock Holmes has a whole story in his own area! But he does not know, it is not supposed to happen. The excitement of discovering something new got him.
Only 3-page story. This 1,300-word story was originally written by Sherlock Holmes and Dr. The conversation between Watson, where Sherlock, without asking for any information, surprisingly finds out that Watson is going to Selkirk, a border area. In the course of the story, Watson also mentions in one place that he is going to take part in the repair work of the bridge in Selkirk.
If the article really belongs to the legendary author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, then the thing is, Elliott is sitting with a book in his hand that no one else remembers today, which is not mentioned in any of the books on Holmes, and more importantly – the book of that time. Conan Doyle himself was present in the area at the time mentioned.
Walter Elliott looked around the book better. At least for 40-50 years, the book has been lying in his attic. Maybe brought from a friend, and don’t remember to give. George Lewis & Co. The book was published in 1903. 112 years ago! Elliott’s history began to unfold before his very eyes like a black and white silent movie.
The 1902 floods badly damaged the Scottish town of Selkirk. The wooden bridge for the people to travel there was destroyed in flood, and everyone suffered. Fundraising for the reconstruction of the bridge began, and a three-day special market was organized in Selkirk. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was present at the market in December 1903, and the book was sold there to raise funds for the construction of the bridge.
On December 10-12, 1903, the market was inaugurated daily by one or another eminent person. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle inaugurated the last day. The list of events that day was found to have Conan Doyle as the inaugural speaker as well as the surname ‘Famous Literary.’
It is not only the name of this famous writer that is associated with the opening of the Selkirk market. On December 8, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle read out excerpts from his novel at Victoria Hall in Selkirk. He also announced that any proceeds from the lessons would be donated to the Selkirk New Bridge Construction Fund.
Now the question may arise in the minds of many – why a famous writer like him was doing such a thing in a border area? The matter seems as mysterious as the story of the Sherlock series written by Conan Doyle, but it is not very complicated at all. Conan Doyle was involved in the politics of the Border Berg region. And at the time, he was also a potential Unionist candidate for the next election.
Historically, Selkirk gave political lectures in the nearby towns of Hawke and Galaciles, in between. He is thought to have survived an earlier attempt to oust him following Mr. Jiang’s intervention. However, the strange thing is that Conan Doyle’s name is not mentioned anywhere on the author’s profile page of The Book O’Debrig!
But his name is on the page of the market opening circular. It is quite unusual to write a story with such a famous author and not mention the author’s name in the end. Many experts claim that this type of writing does not have the imprint of Doyle Munshiana. But things got even more complicated when a woman named Jean, a resident of Selkirk, brought another copy of The Book O’Brien. The specialty of this copy is that Conan Doyle himself has signed the cover!
But this is not the first time Sherlock has been discovered. An unpublished work on Sherlock Holmes was found in Conan Doyle’s papers in the 1950s, entitled The Man Who Was Wanted. At first, the article was referred to by Conan Doyle as a lost piece of writing by various media outlets.
Although the discovery in The Book O’Brien caused a stir in newspapers and on the Internet, it is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. While there is no conclusive evidence as to whether Conan Doyle really wrote the text, which was found in a mountain of dust, it is not possible to prove his inconsistency with the text. Maybe one day, a real Sherlock Holmes will come and solve this mystery! Until then, let’s keep the story of Sherlock’s life built with mystery a little more mystery.
