Left-Wing Party Calls for Abortion Rights to be Enshrined in Basic Law
Berlin, March 05, 2024 – The Left-wing party in Germany has called for abortion rights to be enshrined in the country’s Basic Law.
The Call
The call comes in response to a recent ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court, which found that the current law on abortion is unconstitutional.
The Current Law
The current law allows for abortion on request in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. After 12 weeks, abortion is only allowed in certain cases, such as when the woman’s life is in danger or when the pregnancy is the result of rape.
The Argument
The Left-wing party argues that the current law is too restrictive and that it does not adequately protect women’s rights. They say that abortion should be a woman’s right to decide and that the state should not interfere.
The Response
The government has not yet responded to the Left-wing party’s call. However, it is likely to be met with resistance from conservative parties, which are opposed to abortion.
