Pistorius: Communication Systems “Not Compromised”
Berlin, March 05, 2024 – German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has stated that the communication systems used by the German military were not compromised in the recent Taurus eavesdropping scandal.
Background
In February 2024, it was revealed that the Turkish government had been eavesdropping on communications between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The eavesdropping was reportedly carried out using a device known as a “Taurus” listening device.
Pistorius’ Statement
In a statement to the Bundestag on March 05, 2024, Pistorius said that the Taurus device had been used to target the German government’s communication systems, but that the systems themselves had not been compromised.
“Our communication systems are not and were not compromised,” Pistorius said. “The Taurus device was used to try to intercept communications, but it was unsuccessful.”
Questions Remain
Despite Pistorius’ statement, there are still some questions about the Taurus eavesdropping scandal. For example, it is not clear how the Turkish government was able to obtain the Taurus device.
