Sex Difference in Coronavirus Disease
Men or women are stronger to fight covid infection ?? Various studies on this subject are still ongoing. That research-based article has been published in Scientist Magazine. However, from the results of these studies, scientists have not yet reached a definitive solution. However, today’s event is based on various research topics published in Scientist magazine.
A research article in The Scientist magazine, published in March 2021, states that men are more affected and dying by the effects of covid than women. This article caused a great deal of controversy around the world. Originally, in August 2020, a team of researchers from Yale University published their first research paper on the subject.
The results of that study were recently questioned on the Nature website by another new research paper, entitled: Similarities between men and women based on immunity to covid infections.
What do the research papers say?
In the first paper, researchers at Yale University worked on about 200 immune parameters. Cytokines are one of them. Interleukin-6 (IL-8) and interleukin (IL-18) are higher in men when infection occurs. Interleukin is a type of white blood cell component. According to this study, this component makes the difference between men and women during the transition. In addition, women have higher levels of CD6 + T-cells during infection, which actually acts as a preventative weapon. And in this study, it is because of these T-cell differences that males have a higher mortality rate than women with coronary heart disease.
Gender effects on the immune system
The first study showed that girls had two X chromosomes and boys had one. And since these X chromosomes have two numbers, the TLR7 receptor (TLR7) is more abundant in the female genes. This is the first study to establish that girls are more immune than boys. A study by the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation also tested the rats. According to the study, female rats are more resistant to the SARS virus than male rats.
Takahashi, a researcher, explains that if the uterus is removed from the female-rat body and the estrogen hormone-flow is stopped; however, the inequality between male and female rats disappears. Studies on rats have shown that almost all male rats die after being infected with the SARS virus, where female rats can survive up to 40%. Another study in Syria found that covid infections cause more lung damage in boys than in girls.
But will the results of this study be the same for humans? Is it a difference in immunity? Or any biological hormonal differences?
A study from a hospital in China found that CD6 + T-cells increased and helper-cells decreased after infection in male patients. On the other hand, B and T-cells are found in excess in the body of girls, which is especially beneficial in preventing diseases. Takahashi, a researcher in the study, which was published in August 2020, told critics that what we wanted to say in our research might be helpful in any other large-scale research in the future.
